I am a Manchester-based artist and printmaker, specialising in linocut and woodcut original prints.
In my work I seek to capture a sense of place – and often of escape. I’m interested not just in beautiful, wild or wilderness locations, but also in hidden, atmospheric and industrial places.
I like to experiment and am happiest with my work when it captures the essence of a location close to my heart, including Manchester. I enjoy walking in remote hills, on the coastline and in the city. It gives me a chance to reflect and ponder, to re-balance, step off the busy world for a moment and glory in a simpler life.
I really enjoy the physical process of cutting lino and wood plates and am excited by the way small choices and decisions I make at every stage have an impact. My work is mainly original linocut and woodcut prints onto paper. I tend to cut the blocks at home in Manchester and print them at the Hot Bed Press print workshop in Salford using their fantastic old Albion and Columbian presses. Since February 2012 I’ve also regularly attended Alan Birch’s print workshops at Prospect Studios in Rossendale, Lancashire, where I have developed more work in other print media, including drypoint, monoprinting, etching and aquatint. I have also produced a number of screen prints at Hot Bed Press.
