Printing the Giant Linocut

Carolyn Murphy is in the process of printing a giant A1 linocut commission for Macmillan. Currently at the half way stage, after 3 colours, there are spot colours to hand print, before it goes through the press twice more.

The scale of the linocut alone presents it’s own challenges. Take a look at the video to get a feel for the size!

The third colour transformed the print further today. Printed on the Polymetaal press at Hot Bed Press in Salford, it now looks a lot brighter. You can follow progress of this huge linocut print and learn more about the commission on Carolyn’s blog

Large Linocut Commission

Carolyn Murphy is now working on her first printmaking commission, for Macmillan. It’s going to be a large linocut to go on the wall of the new extension to the Macmillan Support Centre at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital.

The large linocut is being prepared in time for the opening of the Centre’s new extension this Spring.

In preparing for this project, Carolyn has been developing a prototype design to resolve many of the technical challenges. She plans to share the progress of her A1 sized linocut via her blog. To follow this, please check out: http://carolynmurphyprintmaker.blogspot.com/

The image will be created by cutting and printing an A1 piece of lino in stages. It will pass through the press 5 times to build up colours, as well as incorporating spot colours applied by hand.

The linocut design will show hot air balloons over a landscape. The final image will incorporate learning from the prototype stage.

The huge linocut will be created by Carolyn, working at home and at Hot Bed Press in Salford.

20:20 linocut ready to deliver

Carolyn Murphy’s 20:20 linocut for this year’s print exchange is ready – the edition of 25 original prints is all set to go. ‘Into the Woods’ is a multi-plate linocut 15 x 15cm in size and uses Caligo ink on Somerset paper. Carolyn is entering with Prospect Studios this year. Prospect is just one of around 40 printmaking workshops to take part in the 2017 20:20 Print Exchange, organised each year by Hot Bed Press.

Over 500 artists across the UK and further afield will take part in what has become a major event in the printmaking calendar. The exhibition of original prints tours the UK network of printmaking studios and the full collections will also be online.

20:20 prints x 2!

This year Carolyn Murphy is submitting 2 editions for the 20:20 print exchange – yes, sheer madness – one with Alan Birch’s Prospect Studios and another with Hot Bed Press.

Both linocut editions are all done and you can see images below. For more process and stage images check out Carolyn’s blog at carolynmurphyprintmaker.blogspot.co.uk.

A full edition takes quite a lot of space to dry! Both prints are 2 plate linocuts. They are ‘Adjusting the sails’ and ‘Meandering’, respectively. To buy an unframed print, you can now visit the on-line Shop.
