Linocut commission on Macmillan Centre wall

Carolyn Murphy delivered ‘Serenity’, her A1 linocut commission, today, on time, to the Macmillan Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital. It didn’t take long for the building contractors to fix it to the wall in the new extension, which will open soon. The official opening will be in a few months’ time.

The original linocut was created by hand using a reduction process from one huge piece of A1 lino. It went through the etching press five times and the full process is captured in Carolyn’s blog

The huge Macmillan linocut is finished

Carolyn Murphy’s A1 linocut commission for Macmillan is finally finished and drying. It will be delivered to them, framed, on Wednesday 21 March. The video below shows Carolyn printing the final colour at Hot Bed Press in icy conditions:

The snowy weather tried its hardest to interfere with the tight schedule, however it’s all on track.

Probably Prints published a blog about this exciting project.

All the ‘behind the scenes’ images, the story behind the commission and the development of the A1 linocut print and the prototype quarter-sized print are on Carolyn Murphy’s blog.

You can buy this work online via the website Shop.

Printing the Giant Linocut

Carolyn Murphy is in the process of printing a giant A1 linocut commission for Macmillan. Currently at the half way stage, after 3 colours, there are spot colours to hand print, before it goes through the press twice more.

The scale of the linocut alone presents it’s own challenges. Take a look at the video to get a feel for the size!

The third colour transformed the print further today. Printed on the Polymetaal press at Hot Bed Press in Salford, it now looks a lot brighter. You can follow progress of this huge linocut print and learn more about the commission on Carolyn’s blog

Large Linocut Commission

Carolyn Murphy is now working on her first printmaking commission, for Macmillan. It’s going to be a large linocut to go on the wall of the new extension to the Macmillan Support Centre at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital.

The large linocut is being prepared in time for the opening of the Centre’s new extension this Spring.

In preparing for this project, Carolyn has been developing a prototype design to resolve many of the technical challenges. She plans to share the progress of her A1 sized linocut via her blog. To follow this, please check out: http://carolynmurphyprintmaker.blogspot.com/

The image will be created by cutting and printing an A1 piece of lino in stages. It will pass through the press 5 times to build up colours, as well as incorporating spot colours applied by hand.

The linocut design will show hot air balloons over a landscape. The final image will incorporate learning from the prototype stage.

The huge linocut will be created by Carolyn, working at home and at Hot Bed Press in Salford.

Fabric printing workshop

On Saturday 23 September printmaker Carolyn Murphy shared her learning on linocut printmaking onto fabric with a small group at her first fabric printing workshop in the Lake District. It was a hands-on afternoon and the whole group created some lovely work. There were attendees new to lino cutting as well as experienced printmakers. The event was great fun and received some lovely feedback. A big thank you to Kendal artist Geraldine Walkington for organising the session.

Art on the Railings

Didsbury printmaker Carolyn Murphy had a great day today at Didsbury Arts Festival’s ‘Art on the Railings’ event in Fletcher Moss park with fellow printmaker Cate Gibson. Despite the threat of rain the two stayed dry and enjoyed the music, on day 1 of this year’s festival. It could have been a bit warmer – for June!

Carolyn unveiled a new ‘Manchester Old & New II’ linocut (below). The printmakers had a great location and enjoyed taking part in the local festival for a second time. New cards of Carolyn Murphy’s linocuts are now available from the website of ‘Love From The Artist. Unframed work is for sale in the new on-line Shop.
